As well as selling vans complete, Morris~Commercial were happy to supply the chassis to coachbuilders, in two forms – chassis with grille panel supplied loose, and chassis with assembled front end complete with windshield and quarter lights plus front wheelarches and wings. A significant number of ‘J’ type, J/B and 101 chassis were supplied in this way, allowing coachbuilders to offer unique bodies to the customer’s own special requirements. Configurations known to have been produced include luton vans, pick-ups (including tippers), ice cream vans, milkfloats and mobile libraries. Many coachbuilders also adapted the standard van by adding side windows, thereby allowing the van to be used as an ambulance or minibus, depending on how the interior was specified. With Austin Crompton Parkinson Electric Vehicles Limited being part of the Nuffield empire, Morris~Commercial even experimented with an electric ‘J’ type and one is believed to have entered service as a milkfloat with a Dairy in Solihull.
