GPO Utility
GPO Utility, 10 cwt Type 1, Morris. This specification was for “use by two-man parties not requiring a ladder longer than a Ladder, Extension, No 5 which was 8’ 4” closed 20’ 0” extended”.
A passenger seat was provided, which could tilt to facilitate access to the vehicle battery. A folding writing table was mounted above the engine cover, which could be raised when access to the engine was required. Vehicle tools were carried in a padlocked compartment adjacent to the battery compartment.
The body was separated from the cab by a fixed wire-mesh screen, providing security for the van’s contents. Incorporated in the top portion of this screen, behind the driver, was a two-compartment locker for Engineering Instructions, books, papers and personal effects. The wire-mesh screen also carried two hooks for hats and coats.
Within the body was a second floor, 8” above the standard floor, the space between being divided into two compartments. The off-side area would accomodate the No. 5 Ladder, whilst the nearside would carry such items as digging tools pruning rods and folding steps. The nearside of the main space within the body contained standard rack units, and space was allocated for a Jointers toolbox. The rest of the space available was considered suitable for such items as tent sections (used to cover holes when not filled in immediately), Generator Sets, Portable Pumps and Caution Lamps.
As with the Stores van, fixing holes for a standard pin-type towing clevis were provided in the reinforced rear bumper mounting bar and with the same specification that the clevis would only be supplied if the request was authorised by the Area Engineer, and could only be used to tow trailer tool-carts.
