Ken Bennett, RIP

It is with great sadness that we report that Ken Bennett, a long-time member of this Register and of the Morris-Commercial Club, has passed away following a recent operation. We will write more fully when information comes in. He will be missed by all who knew him.

75th Celebrations! Three weeks to go…

The J-type Register is celebrating 75 years of the J, J/B and Austin 101 with a Rally at
the Transport Museum; join us as we celebrate this milestone achievement!
All owners are invited to display, no register membership required and no entry fee.
Drivers will gain free access to the museum as well as a goodie bag following the event! Passengers will be required by the Museum to pay their usual entry charge.
Vehicles of all conditions are welcomed. Trailer parking arranged for those who need it, but please let us know in advance if required.
* Local road run
* Family friendly fun
* Bits and bobs and books for sale
* Wythall’s own electric vehicle display
* Ride-on Miniature Railway (small additional charge for rides)
* Free rides on classic buses (including Routemasters that will also be displaying at the Museum on the same weekend)!

Roll up, roll up, J-types for sale!

At present there are three J-types for sale – two at Mathewson’s Auctions here in the UK and one in Australia.
The two at Mathewson’s are an ice cream van and a standard van.
The ice cream van is a good restoration carried out by Tartaglia’s of Gloucester and is certainly something that an enthusiastic purchaser could use to make good money over the summer months.
Anyone interested in any of these vehicles should check out the two auction sites.
The Mathewson’s auction is on the 17th March 2023.
The Australian auction closed on the 28th February 2023, with the van unexpectedly failing to reach its reserve. The van has been put back on Gray’s auction site for another try:

75th Anniversary Celebration Rally!

The date: 17th and 18th of June 2023.

The location: Wythall Transport museum.

How many vans? That’s up to you!

We’re hoping to bring together as many of our favourite light-commercials as possible. Not only vans, but fans as well as we celebrate this incredible milestone!

The previous record, achieved at the 50th Rally in 1998 and matched at the 60th Rally in 2008, is 29 vehicles, so, if you own one, why not bring it to the event? Driven or trailered, restored or rusty – any classic ‘J’ or ‘Austin 101’ will be most welcome!

We’ve got a bunch of surprises ahead for those of you that turn up with/in a van… but that would be telling! Please let us know (email jtyperegister@gmail.com) if you’re planning on bringing something along for display so you don’t miss out!

Showtime!

Yes, the J-type Register stand is set up and ready to go, except for a little dressing that will be carried out in the morning.

We have two Austins on display, which is quite unusual, and we have two coach built pick-ups on display, a very rare treat.

Plus a half-scale model of one of the pick-ups and a quarter-scale model of the Herritt’s fleet J/B.

Bill McMahon, RIP

It is with great sadness that we report that Bill McMahon, a long-time Register member, passed away recently.

Bill was passionate about all things J. He attended many Register get-togethers in his van JJW 109, believed to be the oldest surviving standard steel-bodied van in England. He was also a regular helper on our stands at the Classic Car Show at the NEC.

We send condolences to his family at this sad time.

Bill will be mourned and missed by all who knew him.

Greetings J enthusiasts

Although the recent hiatus may have given the appearance that the register has closed its doors, we’re still kicking! The truth is that when there’s still so much chaos in the world it feels strange to write about our hobbies, our beloved vans. How can we bang on about J-type matters when there is so much suffering?

The reality is that we can offer little to alleviate any of it but we are not insensitive to these issues! All we can do is muddle on and carry on with our goals as best we can. The J-type Register’s goals have always been to:

  1. Gather and collate information about the history of the vans.

  2. List known survivors.

  3. Act as a central pool of information regarding spares and restoration.

  4. Encourage the use of these wonderful light commercials for the maximum enjoyment of owners and enthusiasts everywhere.

The Register is not, nor has it ever been, a ‘club’. Over the years we’ve tried to impartially help anyone with a J-type problem of any nature. We run on a small Register membership fee which helps cover the ongoing costs of maintaining the website and other outgoings such as insurance fees for cover at Rallies that we attend.

In return for payment of the Register fee there are pages on the website that are password-protected and not available to the casual visitor. One of these pages contains an offer of discounted tickets for the Classic Motor Show in November!

We will be attending the show at the NEC and we’ve lined up quite an unusual collection to display this year, but that’s as much as we’ll let slip for now! We will add more Show info over the next few days.

Do try to join us there, and make use of the member’s discount!

Happy New Year
